Child and Teenager Circumcision
Children and Teenager circumcision in Cardiff, South Wales
We are please to be performing circumcisions for older children and teenagers in our clinic with great results.
Circumcision methods used for older children and teenagers are slightly different than from babies and infants, where the Plastibell (ring) method is commonly used. With older children, it is a good idea to discuss that they will be having the procedure as they have a better understanding of their surroundings.
Circumcision methods for older boys and teenagers
We understand that circumcision can be a difficult time for both children and parents. We pride ourself in providing a first class experience for both child and parents during this important event in your son's life. We endevour to keep your son calm during the procedure using distractions such as video games.
All circumcisions are performed under local anaesthetic. They will not feel any pain during the circumcision which we will demonstrate to you, prior to starting. For older children and teenagers, we will be using the forceps guided circumcision, also known as the traditional "cut and stitch" circumcision. This is because the Plastibell (ring) method will not be suitable for older children, as the ring will be to small to fit on the glans of the penis in this age group. Please note, stitches will not always be required, and this need will vary with each patient.
The advantage of traditional circumcision is that the foreskin (prepuce) is removed immediately and there is no need to wait for a ring to fall off. Your child will need tight fitting briefs after the procedure and avoid activities such as running and jumping, which we will explain to you when we provide verbal and written aftercare.
Forceps guided (Traditional) method
This is the traditional method of circumcision, and it is only usually carried out on older infants when the foreskin has become slightly looser. The procedure involves using special forceps to separate and hold the foreskin away from the glans (head of the penis). The forceps provide a guide for a clean, smooth, cut which is carried out using thermocautery which creates a clean, tidy cut that also has the benefit of minimising bleeding.
The traditional method provides instant results compared to the Plastibell method where you need to wait for the dead skin to fall off naturally. Both methods require keeping the area clean and dry and allowing it to heal naturally.
We offer a full care package as part of our service include pre and post procedure care and follow up appointments.
