Aftercare

At the Circumcision Clinic Wales we offer comprehensive care for patients before and after the circumcision. Circumcisions are very safe procedures and classed as minor surgery. Following the procedure you will be able to take your son home once we are happy that everything is okay usually within 15 – 30 minutes. When your son is discharged, we will provide you with a discharge letter for your GP so that the details of your son’s circumcision is on their medical record.

Prior to discharge we will provide you with comprehensive instructions on how to keep everything clean and care instructions for you to follow. We will also provide you with emergency contact details for any urgent issues that you come across. Our team are also on hand during normal clinic hours to answer any questions you may have about the circumcision or ongoing care.

First 24 hours care

During the first 24 hours you should avoid bathing your child and using water on the penis and ring. You can clean the rest of their body using baby wipes and cotton wool around the area of circumcision. Depending on your baby’s age you may also be able to give them some form of pain management to ease any discomfort, but this will be discussed with you following the procedure.

There may be some swelling and redness during the initial 24 hours, but this is normal as is slough, which is green or yellow in colour. If you have any concerns, please do feel free to reach out to our team.

Day 2 care

From the day after the circumcision you can carry out some basic cleaning of the penis and ring. Avoid water during the morning and then in the evening you can soak the ring in plain lukewarm water for 10 minutes, it’s important to not add anything to the water as this could increase the risk of infection.

Day 3 onwards care

From the third day onwards you should soak the ring in lukewarm water every morning and evening for 10 minutes, or you could give your child a bath. There is no restriction on bathing so you can carry on as you normally would with your normal bath time routine. Once the ring has fallen off you no longer need to soak the area in water each morning and evening.

There are many things that are normal following the circumcision procedure such as blackened skin, yellow colour in the nappy, small amounts of blood, or some small amount of swelling or discolouration. Our team will discuss these with you ahead of the procedure as well as afterwards to ensure you know what is normal and answer any questions you may have.
